A new furnace is one of the biggest home comfort investments a Connecticut homeowner makes, and one of the most consequential to get right. Done properly, it keeps every room warm through the coldest months, runs efficiently for 15-20 years, and lowers your heating bills from the first season. Done wrong, wrong size, poor venting, a rushed installation, and you are looking at cold rooms, high fuel bills, and problems that show up on the first hard freeze.

Age. Most gas furnaces last 15-20 years. If yours is in that range and needs anything more than a minor repair, replacement usually makes more financial sense than continuing to patch an aging system.
Rising energy bills. Furnaces lose efficiency as they age. If your heating bills have crept up year over year without a change in usage, an aging furnace is often the reason. Modern high-efficiency furnaces (95%+ AFUE) can cut fuel costs significantly compared to a furnace installed in the 1990s or early 2000s.
Frequent repairs. If you have called for furnace repair more than once or twice in the past two winters, the system is telling you something. At some point, continuing to repair an old furnace costs more than replacing it.
Uneven heating. Some rooms too warm, others too cold, no matter how you adjust the thermostat. This can mean the furnace is undersized, oversized, or that ductwork issues are compounding an aging system’s problems.
Yellow burner flame instead of blue. A blue flame means clean, complete combustion. A yellow or flickering flame can indicate a combustion problem and, in some cases, a safety issue. This should be inspected right away.
A cracked heat exchanger. If a technician identifies a cracked heat exchanger during a repair visit, this is a safety issue, not a repair. A cracked heat exchanger can allow carbon monoxide into your home’s air supply and means the furnace needs to be replaced.
Load calculation first. Before any equipment is selected, we perform a proper heating load assessment based on your home’s square footage, insulation, window placement, and construction. This determines the right furnace size. An oversized furnace short-cycles and wears out faster. An undersized furnace runs constantly and still cannot keep the house warm on the coldest days.
Equipment selection. Once we know the load, we help you choose between standard efficiency (80% AFUE) and high-efficiency (95%+ AFUE) furnaces, matched to your budget and how long you plan to stay in the home. High-efficiency systems cost more upfront but pay that back over time in lower fuel bills, and many qualify for federal tax credits.
Venting and gas line evaluation. High-efficiency furnaces vent differently than standard furnaces (PVC venting rather than a metal flue). We evaluate what your home needs and whether any venting changes are required as part of the installation.
Ductwork evaluation. If your existing ductwork is undersized, leaky, or poorly routed, the best furnace in the world will not perform the way it should. We assess your ducts as part of the installation and recommend repairs or modifications if needed.
Startup and commissioning. A quality installation ends with a full startup check: gas pressure, combustion analysis, airflow verification, thermostat calibration, and a full system run to confirm it reaches setpoint and holds it. We walk you through everything before we leave.
A typical furnace replacement with existing ductwork and no venting changes takes one day, usually six to eight hours from arrival to completion.
Here is how the day runs: morning arrival and walkthrough to confirm the installation plan and protect interior work areas, removal of the old furnace, new furnace placement, positioned and leveled and secured, venting and gas connections installed or modified as needed and pressure-tested, ductwork connections sealed, electrical and thermostat wiring connected, startup and combustion analysis to confirm proper and safe operation, and a full walkthrough with the homeowner covering thermostat operation, filter changes, and warranty coverage.

These ranges reflect the full installed cost, equipment, labor, venting, electrical, and startup, not equipment-only prices. Factors that raise the installed cost include no existing ductwork or significant duct repair, difficult access, electrical panel or gas line upgrades, and fuel type conversions. Under the Inflation Reduction Act, qualifying high-efficiency furnaces are eligible for a federal tax credit up to $600, and Connecticut offers additional rebates through Eversource and United Illuminating.
