You hear banging, rattling, or squealing. A loud bang at startup often means delayed ignition, gas building up before it lights, then igniting all at once. This should be addressed quickly, since it stresses the heat exchanger. Squealing usually points to a worn blower motor belt or bearing. Rattling can mean a loose panel or a failing component inside the cabinet.
Short cycling. If the furnace turns on, runs for a few minutes, then shuts off and restarts repeatedly, it is short-cycling. Common causes include a dirty air filter restricting airflow, a failing thermostat, or a cracked heat exchanger triggering a safety shutoff.
Your energy bills have jumped without explanation. A furnace working harder than it should, due to a clogged filter, dirty burners, or a failing component, burns more fuel. If your heating bill increased 20 percent or more without a change in usage, the furnace is the likely reason.
You notice a burning smell or smell gas. A slight burning smell during the first run of the season is normal (dust burning off). A persistent burning smell, or any smell of gas, is not. If you smell gas, leave the house and call your gas utility immediately before calling for HVAC service.
The pilot light or igniter will not stay lit. On older furnaces with a standing pilot, this usually means a failing thermocouple. On newer furnaces with electronic ignition, it typically points to a dirty or failing flame sensor.

A cracked heat exchanger on a furnace over 15 years old usually is not, that is a safety issue that typically means replacement.
Cracked heat exchanger. This deserves special mention. A cracked heat exchanger can allow carbon monoxide into your home’s air supply. If a technician identifies this, we will red-tag the furnace and recommend immediate replacement, this is not a repair we will patch and send you on your way with.
Repair frequency. If this is the third service call in two winters, the furnace is telling you something. Compounding repairs on an aging system usually mean it is at the end of its useful life.
